Rivet Selection Guide
1. Choose Rivet Type Based on Connection Method
-
Blind Rivet (POP Rivet)
Operable from one side; ideal for sheet metal, aluminum profiles, and thin metal connections. Most common industrial type. -
Solid Rivet
Highest strength; used in aerospace, railway, automotive, and heavy structural applications. -
Semi-Tubular / Tubular Rivet
Suitable for soft materials or applications requiring lower installation force, e.g., electronics, hardware, and appliances. -
Split / Open-End Rivet
Ideal for soft materials such as leather, plastic, or wood; strong grip. -
Structural Blind Rivet
High-load, vibration-resistant, can replace welding in steel structures or solar mounting systems.
2. Choose Material Based on Environment
-
Aluminum – Lightweight, corrosion-resistant; commonly used with aluminum or thin sheet metals.
-
Stainless Steel (304/316) – Excellent corrosion resistance; suitable for marine, high-salt, and outdoor environments.
-
Carbon Steel – Economical; suitable for general structural fastening.
-
Copper / Brass – Good conductivity; ideal for electrical or decorative applications.
Tip: Material should generally match or be compatible with the base material to avoid galvanic corrosion.
3. Select Length Based on Grip Range (Board Thickness)
-
Total material thickness must fall within the rivet’s Grip Range.
-
Too short → Rivet cannot form properly; insufficient clamping.
-
Too long → Rivet stem cannot fully break; connection may be loose.
Recommendation: Add 0.3–0.5 mm to the material thickness for safety.
Example:
-
Total sheet thickness = 4.5 mm
-
Suitable rivet: Grip Range 3–6 mm
4. Select Head Type Based on Load and Surface Requirements
| Head Type | Recommended Application |
|---|---|
| Dome Head | General-purpose, most industries |
| Large Flange | Soft materials or a large surface area prevent pull-through |
| Countersunk | Flush installation; doors, appliances, decorative panels |
| Closed-End | Water- and air-tight applications |
5. Select Rivet Strength Based on Load
-
Standard Blind Rivet – Light-duty sheet metal and appliance assemblies.
-
Closed-End Blind Rivet – Water-resistant, higher tensile and shear strength; automotive, solar, outdoor enclosures.
-
Large Flange Rivet – Spreads load on soft or thin materials.
-
Explosion / Expanding Rivet – Maximum grip; steel structures and vehicle manufacturing.
-
Structural Rivet (Monobolt / Tri-Fold) – Highest strength; heavy machinery, automotive, or critical load applications.
6. Choose Rivet Based on Installation Tool
-
Manual Rivet Gun – Standard blind rivets.
-
Pneumatic / Electric Rivet Gun – Large diameter rivets, structural rivets.
-
Automated Riveting System – Reel-fed rivets for industrial automation.
7. Industry-Specific Recommendations
| Industry | Recommended Rivet | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Solar mounting systems | 304 / 316 stainless steel, closed-end blind rivet | Corrosion-resistant, long-term outdoor durability |
| Metal roofing/construction | Large flange aluminum or stainless rivet | Prevent sheet pull-through, distribute load |
| Automotive body | Structural rivet | High strength, vibration-resistant |
| Sheet metal/appliances | Standard aluminum blind rivet | Cost-effective, easy installation |
| Machinery & equipment | Steel structural rivet | High load-bearing capacity |
