    Product Overview

Product Application

DIN 6912 refers to hexagon socket thin-head cap screws with a pilot recess.

It is the “low-head/thin-head version” of the standard hexagon socket screw DIN 912. Its head height (k) is approximately half that of the standard hexagon socket screw, and it is specifically designed for use in precision machinery where installation space is severely limited.

Due to the thinner head, its overall tensile load-bearing capacity is reduced; it is therefore primarily used for positioning, securing, and non-load-bearing structural connections.

Key Specifications and Parameters

  • Key Feature (Pilot Recess): This is the most distinctive feature of DIN 6912. At the center of the hex socket recess, an additional small, deep, cylindrical hole (pilot recess) has been machined. This hole is designed to be used with a special hex wrench equipped with a pilot pin (DIN 6911), which effectively prevents the wrench from tilting or slipping and protects the shallow recess from being damaged by twisting. Due to the presence of this central hole at the bottom, DIN 6912 cannot be manufactured with a fully through-threaded design; a small unthreaded section must remain at the root.
  • Equivalent Standards: There is no exact successor standard in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the global industrial community continues to uniformly use the DIN 6912 designation to this day.
  • Common Strength Grades: Due to the thinner head, the overall tensile load-bearing capacity is reduced. Therefore, although it is available in high-strength carbon steel grades 8.8 and 10.9, it is primarily used for positioning, fastening, and non-load-bearing structural connections. Common stainless steel grades are A2-70 (304) and A4-80 (316).

Common Distinctions Among Similar Categories

If you’re looking for thin-head hex socket screws, you’ll typically come across these two very similar standards:

  • DIN 6912 vs. DIN 7984: Both feature thin cylindrical heads. The main difference is that DIN 7984 lacks an internal guide hole, and the bottom of its hex socket is flat, allowing it to be manufactured as a “fully threaded” screw in longer lengths, whereas DIN 6912 is always half-threaded, with an unthreaded shank.
  • DIN 6912 vs. DIN 912: The head height is significantly reduced (for example, in the M6 size, DIN 912 is 6 mm thick, while DIN 6912 is only 4 mm thick).

Product Advantages

  • Low Head Design

Reduces installation height and fits assemblies with limited clearance while maintaining secure fastening.

  • Hex Socket Drive

Provides high torque transmission with minimal cam-out, making it suitable for automated assembly and precision equipment.

  • Precision Manufacturing

Produced to DIN tolerances for excellent dimensional consistency and interchangeability.

Common Questions

What is the difference between DIN 6912 and DIN 912?

DIN 6912 has a lower head and reduced load capacity, while DIN 912 is designed for higher preload applications.

What is DIN 6912 used for?

It is used where installation height is limited, such as automation equipment, robotics, and compact machinery.

Is DIN 6912 available in stainless steel?

Yes. A2 (304) and A4 (316) stainless steel are standard options.

Can DIN 6912 screws be customized?

Yes. Custom materials, sizes, coatings, and packaging are supported.
